This Genre Ain’t Big Enough for the Both of Us

My game group is very small, and we can’t meet very often. We try to play every other weekend, and that often turns in to once a month. For a long time we were just running one game, and it was me dungeon mastering some old modules using some retro-clone rules. Now my group has acquired the new Dungeons and Dragons rules, and we’ve started another game, this time with me as a player. Adding a second game to the mix and combining that with our limited play scheduled is rough. We haven’t played my old school game since August 24 and we haven’t played the new school game since September 1. That’s a lot of time between dungeon crawls.

So I’ve been thinking that since we have such limited time to play, I’d like to maybe throw something into the mix that isn’t Dungeons and Dragons. Clearly a third game is out of the question, so it looks like for now one of the Dungeons and Dragons games would have to go if we want to play anything else. I haven’t made a final decision yet, and I’d want to talk to my players about it, but I’m thinking I might stop running my old school game. I certainly don’t want to stop playing our game of 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons, since we’ve barely scratched the surface of these new rules and everyone is having a great time with them. Of course, everyone is having a great time with my game too, and it’s not a lack of interest in that campaign that makes me not want to run it. In fact, I’m enjoying running it. But I keep looking at this Fate Core book on my shelf that I’ve barely got to use. There are a few other game books over there too, but this one keeps calling to me.

I’ve had a couple of abortive attempts at running a “side game” of Fate, something to play with a couple of my players when the other ones couldn’t show up for our Dungeons and Dragons game, and those have both petered out after a couple of sessions. One reason that I feel like those games fell short was was because they weren’t ever the “main game” that I was running. I would spend all week thinking about and preparing for my Dungeons and Dragons game, and then when that didn’t happen I wouldn’t have anything prepared or any inspiration for my Fate game. I really want to give Fate another try, and I want to give it the attention that it deserves. Also, as fun as running old modules is, I have a desire to run some adventures of my own devising.

Maybe we’ll wrap the old game up in a semi-satisfying way first, or at the very least not just leave the characters stranded down in the moat house dungeon. They aren’t in the greatest of situations right now anyway, so there is a chance that one more session of that game is all we need to wrap things up anyway, although I’m sure not in the way that the players imagined. Either way, I think the next game we play will be the new Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and we’ll see what happens after that.

  1. A method we use is to treat the game a bit like a TV show. You don’t have to end it, you can wrap up the old school d&d “season” and start a new game. If you are not sure you will come back to the old game wrap it up in a way that could be a satisfying end, otherwise maybe wrap it up with the resolution of a couple of elements but a cliff hanger for something else. Then there is a natural restart point should you want to return.

    1. I think this is a great idea. I feel like we are close to a good cliffhanger point where we can leave things, and then if we want to pick it back up everyone will remember that moment and be able to jump right back into the game.

    2. At this point I’ve decided to shelve the old school game for the time being, and we’ll play Fate the next time we are scheduled to play that game instead. I’d like to play at least one more session of the other game, but we play so infrequently that I really don’t want to put off starting the new game for another month.
