Never Underestimate the Resourcefulness of the Internet

Two days ago I posted this on Twitter, jokingly asking if anyone could identify the video game I was playing. This picture has to be close to thirty years old, and I had absolutely no idea what game this was, nor did I expect anyone else to be able to identify the blurry image on this monitor.

But then the internet got to work.

The tweet quickly had several likes and retweets, and a few people took a stab at guessing what game this could be. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was a popular guess early on. Then more retweets, likes and guesses happened. Then someone took the initiative to post this picture to a C64/128 Facebook group and things got really interesting. A full-scale forensic investigation was conducted:

And just like that my unanswerable question was answered! The evidence above makes it pretty clear that this game is in fact The Way of The Exploding Fist, a game that I did indeed have and that I can remember playing.

I was speechless. In less than 24 hours the mystery had been solved. I’m amazed at not only the speed, but the enthusiasm with which this mystery was solved. The internet took an off-handed question that I didn’t think it was possible to answer and then answered it in an astonishingly short amount of time.

Just something to keep in mind if you ever think you have a question that can’t be answered.

That’s all for today. I will now leave you with an extended gameplay video of The Way of the Exploding Fist that was posted to Twitter by a person who may have cracked the case independently, without the forensic investigation:
